For those of you who don't know me well, Kristannukah is the 8-day celebration of my birth. It started 6 years ago to celebrate my 30th birthday. I know the math seems "off" as I tell people that I am: 29, 52 & sometimes 40. The year my close friends & I turned 30, people became insane. Not all people, just the ones turning 30. Some people celebrated by having very elaborate meals in fancy restaurants, some rented limos and went on a pub crawl to celebrate their past. Either way, there was too much hulabaloo for me. People asked what I wanted to do. I pondered this question and really felt that 30 wasn't a big deal, why should I make a big deal about it? My final answer: "I want to go that rustic cabin in Guilford, ME. Crack open a can of Miller Lite at 10:00 am & scratch my ass while looking at the pond." My significant other (sig. oth.) said, "Great! Who should be there?".
That first year only 4 people came including myself & my sig. oth. It was wonderful! No chaos, no big deal & a whole lotta fun! The rules were established that year:
Come with good attitude and a sense of camaraderie!
Each person is responsible for providing a meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner). Free-loaders are not welcome! We're a community damnit!!
Each person is responsible to bring what they are drinking.
Each person will take turns doing dishes.
Bring cards, games, puzzles anything that looks like fun for all to do.
You can make "alone time" available if you try hard enough so don't forget books, hiking shoes, bikes, whatever..
The shower is unavailable. Use the pond since the shower water is actually pond water anyway.
And, my favorite!! If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's red or brown, flush it down!
Now, 6 years later there are usually up to 14 people that come and go throughout the week and the same basic rules apply! Do I have the best friends or what? This year, there was a change in venue. We rented a place in Hubbardton, VT instead. Equally glorious, equally rustic & an equally wonderful time.
Thank you to all who spent Kristannukah with me, I am truly lucky!
